I was hurriedly walking down lower Broadway in Manhattan, the stretch that seems to be one long blur of retail shops and pipe staging, when I saw the phrase, “plus size lingerie,” in a shop window. I am used to the shoe stores, the rug stores, all the national brands, Gap, Wet Seal, Abercrombie and his Fitch, the endless array of hip-hop shops, the better to outfit a hip-hop fop, but the plus-size-lingerie sign forced me out of my comfort zone.
I know I’m not supposed to voice these thoughts but do plus size women need lingerie? Does any woman need lingerie?
Not to be crude but what exactly do women think men want to do when they see them in lingerie? If you guess, rip it off, you take home the knife set.
So why the lingerie? Well certainly the lingerie manufacturers are all for it. And their employees, most of them who never wear lingerie, are dependent on its manufacture and sale. The store owner has a vested interest in selling anything to anybody to keep the doors open and lights on, as the saying goes.
Strippers, of course, have to start out their act wearing something, although I doubt it is plus size.
And what about the plus size women? Are they comfortable with being labeled, “plus sized?” Women know if they are overweight. My theory is it is a defense mechanism for having to go out into the world and declaring you are here and ready to take on all the adult responsibilities, like raising children. The plus size and a wardrobe of gray and black clothes should pretty much kill the ardor of most men. I was just trying to get down lower Broadway I really did not want to think about lingerie in any size or form.
